Le Chateau De Nyon Exposition Temporaire

This poster was side by side with another poster located on a suburban street in Nyon. I found this poster as I was wondering around the town after visiting the Léman Museum. I was immediately attracted to the image because of its unique style and its hard-to-miss eye level position. This poster is an example of both International Style as well as Postmodern Poster influence. The International Style is easily seen in the type. The font, a sans serif, is placed in a grid that is flushed left and ragged right. This is generally typical of the International Style, however, some of the rules have been broken. In this type, Postmodern influence can also be seen by the way the designer split the words and continued them in the line below. The image in the background could also be influenced by both International Style and Postmodernism because it is photo rather than an illustration, and it is also very playful. The concept behind this poster is to let people know that a temporary exposition will be on display at the Le Chateau De Nyon. The artist whose works will be on display is the photographer Yves Humbert. Perhaps the image in the background is an example of his artwork. One weak point in this poster is the lack of any type/image relationship. It looks as if the type was just placed on top of the image without much thought. One positive part of the design is the 55/5/5 rule. I think this rule applies in this poster because the big black type attracts the attention of the viewer from far away. From five feet away the viewer is able to view the medium size type as well as the background image. From 5 inches away the small type can be read and the viewer can get a closer look at the background artwork. I was attracted to this poster because of its unique imagery. I wasn’t sure what the background image was, and it made me want to find out. Overall, I feel this poster was successful in advertising for the Yves Humbert exposition.
